NYPD Increasing 'Dark Knight Rises' Theater Security After ...

Following the shooting death of at least twelve theatergoers at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises in the Denver suburb of Aurora, New York City Police Department Commissioner Ray Kelly issued a statement promising increased security measures for showings of the blockbuster Batman film in Gotham.

Kelly said that the extra security will come "as a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons in the wake of the horrendous shooting in Colorado."

Along with the 12 killed, at least 38 were injured in the shooting.

On Friday morning, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a noted gun control advocate, called on President Obama and GOP challenger Mitt Romney to take a stance on the issue in the wake of the shootings.

"You know, soothing words are nice, but maybe it?s time that the two people who want to be President of the United States stand up and tell us what they are going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country," he said. "And everybody always says, 'Isn?t it tragic,' and you know, we look for was the guy, as you said, maybe trying to recreate Batman. I mean, there are so many murders with guns every day, it?s just got to stop. And instead of the two people ? President Obama and Governor Romney ? talking in broad things about they want to make the world a better place, okay, tell us how. And this is a real problem."

Earlier in the day, the president issued a statement, saying in part, "We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded. As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family."

Romney added, "We expect that the person responsible for this terrible crime will be quickly brought to justice."
