BERLIN (AP) ? Justin Bieber's pet monkey is set to become the property of Germany.

Mally the Monkey was seized by German customs March 28 when Bieber failed to produce required vaccination and import papers for the animal after landing in Munich. He had until midnight Friday to produce those documents.

Customs spokesman Thomas Meister said after offices opened following a holiday weekend that officials received no documents. He said the customs authority will formally transfer ownership of the animal to the German state on Tuesday.

Bieber will then have six weeks to contest the decision. It wasn't immediately clear when authorities will make a decision on the monkey's permanent home.

Mally, a capuchin monkey, has been cared for at Munich's animal shelter since being taken into quarantine.

As NRA meets, Great Gun Debate intensifies America's culture war (+video)

Both sides in the debate over gun policy are indulging in stereotypes and name-calling, fueled by a distrust bred from previous culture war fights. As the NRA convention continues this weekend, are red and blue America really so far apart?

By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff writer / May 4, 2013

National Rifle Association members bow their heads in prayer before the start of the Annual Meeting of Members in Houston, Texas on May 4. Organizers expect some 70,000 attendees at the 142nd NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits in Houston, which began on Friday and continues through Sunday.

Outside and inside the NRA convention in Houston this weekend, Americans will witness a central clash over the future of the Second Amendment.

To proponents of stricter gun control, some of whom will protest outside the convention hall on Saturday, ?common sense? proposals such as expanded background checks on gun buyers could immediately improve safety in a country where handguns are involved in about 30,000 deaths a year, two-thirds of them suicides.

But to many of America?s gun owners, some 70,000 of whom have also flocked to Houston, any measure of additional federal gun control is tantamount to a Trojan horse in a broader culture war ? a way not only to suppress gun rights, but also to conduct a sneak attack on attitudes, viewpoints, and a lifestyle that they hold dear, all in the name of "gun safety."?

That cultural divide seems only to be growing, as NRA members gather this weekend and as Vice President Joe Biden vowed Friday to try again on expanded background checks. Each side seems intent on playing up the indignity of the other's position ? some indulging in name-calling and flame-throwing ? perhaps with an eye to rousing their political allies ahead of the 2014 midterm elections, when control of Congress will be at stake. The upshot is a debate that intensifies regional splits and serves to exacerbate the red/blue political divide, say some analysts.

At the NRA convention, the message to gun owners so far has been that they and their values are under siege. Former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin told convention-goers Friday that ?the lamestream media just plain doesn?t get you.? The NRA?s new first vice president, James Porter, noted that the political clash over gun control is a ?cultural fight on the 10 guarantees,? a reference to the Bill of Rights that makes up the first 10 amendments to the US Constitution.

In a video preceding his remarks at the NRA convention, Gov. Rick Perry (R) of Texas fires an assault rifle, then takes his finger off the trigger, removes a magazine, and gives a John Wayne glare past the camera.?Bounding onto the stage, Governor Perry yelled ?Welcome to Texas!? before conflating dislike of guns with dislike of people who like guns: "You can almost set your watch for how long it takes for people who hate guns, who hate gun owners, to start a new campaign" after a mass shooting, he said.

U.S. jobless claims fall to 5-year low of 324K

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The number of Americans seeking unemployment aid fell last week to seasonally adjusted 324,000, the lowest since January 2008. The drop points to fewer layoffs and possibly more hiring.

The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly applications fell 18,000, the second straight sharp drop. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, plummeted 16,000 to 342,250, close to a five-year low.

Applications are a proxy for layoffs. When they fall below 350,000, it is generally consistent with moderate hiring.

But layoffs are only half the equation: Companies also need to be confident enough to add workers for job growth to pick up and lower the unemployment rate. Many have held off adding new workers in recent months, possibly because of concerns about the impact of federal spending cuts and tax increases.

Economists forecast that the economy added 160,000 jobs last month. That's much better than the 88,000 added in March, but below last year's pace of nearly 185,000 per month. The unemployment rate is expected to remain unchanged at 7.6 percent.

But many have lowered their estimates this week, some as low as 120,000, after several reports suggested that slower growth is dragging down hiring. The government will release the April employment report Friday.

The spending cuts, known as sequestration, and higher Social Security taxes may be making businesses more cautious about hiring. And the tax increase could slow consumer spending. The Federal Reserve said Wednesday that those policies are "restraining economic growth."

"We think hiring will be more subdued in the second quarter as the economy weathers a consumer spending slowdown and sequestration job cuts," said Julia Coronado, an economist at BNP Paribas. Unemployment benefit applications "will not capture either of these developments." One reason layoffs may not rise is that federal agencies are cutting hours, rather than jobs.

The data ahead of Friday's jobs report have been discouraging. On Wednesday, payroll provider ADP said companies added just 119,000 jobs in April. And a survey of manufacturers by the Institute for Supply Management found that a measure of employment fell sharply last month.

Many companies have been advertising more jobs but have been slow to fill them. Job openings jumped 11 percent during the 12 months that ended in February, but the number of people hired declined, according to a Labor Department report last month.

Nearly 5 million people received unemployment aid during the week ended April 13, the latest data available. That's down from nearly 5.1 million in the previous week.

Still, consumers are more optimistic that the job market is healing and will deliver higher pay later this year, according to a survey of April consumer confidence released this week. And lower gas prices could offset some of the pinch from the tax increase.

The economy grew at an annual rate of 2.5 percent from January through March, the government said last week. That was an improvement from the anemic growth of 0.4 percent in the final three months of last year. Most economists expect growth will slow in the current quarter to 2 percent or lower.

Office Ergonomics and Productivity | Business Fundas

Office workers that spend their days typing away and answering phones at their desks can ultimately find themselves susceptible to a variety of repetitive stress injuries. Desk jobs may not be considered physical per se, but they can still take a toll on the body.

According to The Daily Mail UK, about 68% of office workers suffer from pain at the office. Carpal tunnel syndrome?is the most famous of these maladies, and it affects the hands and wrists, but aches and pains from a day at the office can actually stress any part of the body. If a day at the office puts your ?rear end in a sling?, you may need some Ergonomics.

Ergonomics is the science of designing furniture and tools in such a way that their use feels natural to the human body, and produces no unnatural strains. It?s a no brainer that our bodies did not evolve for the world we have created for ourselves. Our bodies evolved for life on the African savannah, spearing an occasional zebra or wildebeest for a meal, running from the hungry lion or cheetah, building a fire to keep the scary things away at night, and cuddling with our honeys at night in order to achieve the best Darwinian or Dawkensian ?reproductive fitness.? The owner?s use manual doesn?t say anything about sitting in a chair for 8 hours, or twiddling one?s fingers on a little board while resting one?s wrists at its edge.

In order to reduce physical strain, a number of ergonomic office supplies are available. Such as:

Ergonomic keyboard and mouse?- these items are designed so that the natural shape of your hand is what connects with the object. Strain can occur when you are asking your body to repetitively take on positions that are just not normal. The repetitive action increases the physical strain. Both ergonomic keyboards and the computer mouse are slanted to follow the natural conformation of your hand. The ergonomic computer mouse also frequently comes accompanied with a roller ball that moves with better ease that the traditional scroll wheel. Ergonomic products do take some getting used to as they feel different than what many office workers are used to using, but once you adjust to the differences they can be beneficial for your physical health.

Ergonomic desk chairs?- Many chairs are designed for appearance over comfort, and whether these are chairs that are at the desks of workers, or conference room chairs, they can result in discomfort when used for an extended period of time. When the chair is not designed for ergonomics, office workers?find their use to be ?a pain in? [a well-known body-part]. They need business conference chairs that are ergonomically engineered. After a morning sitting in your cubicle, at a normal chair, a meeting in the conference room, with everyone sitting in ergonomic business conference chairs, could actually provide a rest for your weary hams.

So, if you are a company trying to maximize the?productivity and good cheer of your employees, you would do well to invest in some ergonomically-engineered business conference chairs.

The underground adventures of the Mediterranean frog Rana iberica

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

Do frogs live underground? The answer is yes, some amphibians, such as salamanders and frogs have been often reported to dwell in subterranean habitats, some of them completely adjusted to the life in darkness, and others just spending a phase of their lifecycle in an underground shelter. Up until 2010, however, no one suspected that the Mediterranean anuran frog Rana iberica - commonly known as Iberian brown frog and usually found in streams - also participates in underground adventures. A new study published in the open access journal Subterranean Biology confirms the first report of Rana iberica reproduction in a cave-like habitat, with all life stages observed in the galleries.

Serra da Estrela Natural Park is located in north-central Portugal and is the largest protected area and one of the most biodiverse regions in Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula. Several drainage galleries were created for water capture in the 1950s, even before the establishment of the boundaries of the Natural Park. It is namely in these artificial subterranean habitats that the Iberian brown frog was discovered dwelling underground by biologists.

"The unusual sighting of R. iberica motivated a series of subsequent visits that started in 2011 up until December 2012 to understand the use of this artificial subterranean habitat by this species.", explains the lead author of the study Dr. Gon?alo M. Rosa. "All life stages were observed in the gallery during the study period, particularly adults, which were observed every month of the year."

The Iberian brown frog does not only seek refuge in the drainage galleries as a sporadic visitor. During long observations, adults from the species have been noted in the galleries, often standing on the ground or in crevices, swimming underwater or even climbing up the walls. There is evidence of mating activity, and batches of eggs have been found stuck to submerged rocks in the subterranean stream. Recently hatched tadpoles were also observed, initially remaining stationary above the egg mass for about two weeks, then swimming in the streams and feeding on the dead egg mass. The galleries are used by other amphibians as well, and larvae of the fire salamander Salamandra salamandra gallaica have been recorded twice while preying on brown frog tadpoles.

The choice of the artificial drainage gallery for a habitat of the Iberian brown frog may appear odd initially. However, it seems that the animals find a refuge in the cool and humid tunnels, often containing a small stream. These artificial subterranean habitats are in fact often used as a refuge for many species. They are, for example, particularly important for the salamander Chioglossa lusitanica, an Iberian endemic of conservation concern. Scientists express their fear that such preferences for underground habitats might in fact be a sign for the ecological dangers of the dramatic climate changes experienced by the Iberian region. Monitoring the subterranean activity of various species might provide important cues for future conservation efforts.

Local setbacks vex GOP governors eyeing 2016 race

(AP) ? Republican governors are often seen as innovative policymakers and potential presidential candidates, but a few are struggling with political or ethical problems that might crimp their ambitions.

Two governors eyeing possible White House bids ? Bob McDonnell of Virginia and Bobby Jindal of Louisiana ? suddenly find themselves fending off critics and trying to shore up legacies they hope will withstand national scrutiny. Other high-profile governors run the gamut from maintaining solid popularity to being in danger of losing re-election next year.

Governorships can be springboards to the White House, as Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and others have shown. But the high visibility also can lead to painful falls.

McDonnell, who built an image as a competent problem-solver, confronted questions Tuesday about an FBI inquiry into gifts he accepted from a wealthy Virginia businessman. And Jindal, even in a Republican-dominated state, had to pull back his ambitious plan to replace Louisiana's corporate and personal income taxes with higher sales taxes. His popularity has sagged lately.

The 2016 presidential election is far away, of course, and the GOP has plenty of possible contenders. They include current and former governors, such as Chris Christie of New Jersey and Jeb Bush of Florida.

Still, McDonnell's and Jindal's struggles ? combined with those of Republican governors in Pennsylvania, Florida, South Carolina and elsewhere ? prove that governorships can be far from ideal incubators of political ideas and national ambitions.

"It's a double-edge sword, being chief executive," said John Ullyot, a Republican strategist and former Senate aide from Virginia. Effective governors, he said, can implement agendas and build reputations for bipartisanship, as Christie has sometimes done in New Jersey.

"But if something goes wrong in your state," Ullyot said, "there's no one to blame but you."

Starting with McDonnell and Christie in 2009, and followed by an impressive class the following year, Republicans won gubernatorial races in numerous states carried by President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. They included Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida and New Mexico.

Politically, the timing was ideal. GOP control of these battleground states enabled Republicans to dominate the once-a-decade redrawing of congressional districts after the 2010 census. It's one reason Republicans hold a 31-seat House majority even though Americans cast a million more votes last November for Democratic House candidates than for Republicans.

Some of these new GOP governors ? mostly notably John Kasich of Ohio and Scott Walker of Wisconsin ? pushed conservative agendas so fast and fiercely that the public backlash forced them to regroup and proceed more diplomatically.

Republican Govs. Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania and Rick Scott of Florida, who have lower national profiles, are among those still struggling to rebound from early problems.

McDonnell's and Jindal's woes draw notice beyond their states because they are among the half-dozen or so most-discussed Republicans in early political chatter about 2016. Democrats have ambitious governors, too, including Maryland's Martin O'Malley and New York's Andrew Cuomo. But Hillary Rodham Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden tend to dominate early Democratic talk about Obama's possible successor.

In Virginia, McDonnell had enjoyed comfortable approval ratings and was seen as a conservative pragmatist unafraid to compromise. Last winter, he achieved a landmark overhaul of the state's failing system for funding road construction and addressing acute gridlock in the Washington suburbs and the Norfolk region.

That image was rocked by Monday's news that the FBI is examining ties McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, have with a Virginia-based food supplements maker that's the subject of a federal securities probe and two shareholder lawsuits.

McDonnell told WTOP radio that his administration never gave special treatment to Star Scientific Inc. or its CEO, Jonnie Williams, who had given McDonnell more than $100,000 in political contributions and spent thousands of dollars more on personal gifts to McDonnell and his family.

Virginia law did not require the governor to disclose the $15,000 that Williams gave McDonnell's daughter Cailin for her wedding. But in his radio appearance Tuesday, McDonnell acknowledged the political sensitivity of the matter.

"I think, obviously, from the attention it has gotten, it has certainly now been disclosed," he said. He said it was hard to say whether he would ask his daughter to reject the gift if given a chance to do it over. "It's caused a fair amount of pain for me personally," McDonnell said. "I'm a governor, but I'm also a dad and I love my daughter very much."

In Louisiana, polls and anecdotal evidence suggest many people have grown tired of Jindal's national travels, state government layoffs and budget cuts, especially to health care and higher education. His sweeping tax plan drew wide criticism.

It marked a setback for the fast-talking Yale Law School graduate and Rhodes scholar, who has urged the GOP to stop being "the stupid party" that's out of step on key social matters.

In the past 50 years, more governors and vice presidents have been elected president than have sitting senators, although a few senators almost always try. Republican senators weighing possible presidential bids in 2016 include Rand Paul of Kentucky and Marco Rubio of Florida.

Republican Mitt Romney and Democrat Michael Dukakis are among the incumbent or former governors who won their party's nomination but failed to win the White House. Four of the last six presidents, however, were governors.

Republican Governors Association spokesman Jon Thompson defended his team. GOP governors, he said, are balancing budgets "while tackling energy, pension and education reform. Their successful brand of results-oriented conservatism shows why today's leaders of the GOP come from the states."

Celtics stay alive, beat Knicks to force Game 6

NEW YORK (AP) ? The 11-0 deficit in Game 5 was wiped away. The 3-0 deficit in the series might be next.

The Boston Celtics are two victories from NBA history, and from extending the Knicks' postseason futility in a most improbable manner.

Kevin Garnett had 16 points and 18 rebounds and the Celtics stayed alive in the playoffs, cutting New York's lead to 3-2 with a 92-86 victory Wednesday night.

The Celtics will host Game 6 on Friday night, needing two wins to become the first NBA team to overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a series.

"Our mentality has been like a Game 7 mentality. It's an all-out mentality. One that is no tomorrow. Period. Point blank," Garnett said. "We put ourselves in this 3-0 position and now we're just trying to fight our way out of it."

Brandon Bass added 17 points, steadying Boston as it shook off an 11-0 deficit and pulled away in the second half to stop the Knicks again from achieving their first playoff series victory since 2000.

"That shows you how resilient we are. Down 11-0, it could have been easy to say, 'All right fellas, hey, we made a great effort but it just wasn't good enough,'" reserve Jason Terry said. "We know we're just starting to jell as a team and injuries have plagued us all season long, but in this series it's all about heart, who is willing to go out there every night, every possession and leave it all out there. If that's not good enough, then we'll be going home."

J.R. Smith, back from his one-game suspension for elbowing Terry with the Knicks way ahead late in Game 3, missed his first 10 shots and finished 3 of 14 for 14 points.

Jeff Green scored 18 points and Paul Pierce had 16 as he and Garnett, the two franchise stalwarts, extended this season ? and perhaps their Celtics careers ? at least one more game.

"Obviously being down 2-0 or 3-0 or whatever it was, we could have folded shop. Nobody in here is going to quit," said Terry, who scored 17.

Carmelo Anthony scored 22 points but was just 8 of 24 in another dismal shooting night for the Knicks, who blew a big lead in this game and now the series. They face an unwanted trip back to Boston instead of the rest this aging roster could surely use before the second round.

If they get there.

"I think we're fine," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. "Sure we would've loved to close it out and move on, but nobody said it would be easy."

The Knicks would host Game 7 on Sunday.

"I told you from Game 1 that this wasn't going to be a breeze, it wasn't going to be a walk in the park, them guys were going to fight and they're showing some fight right now," Anthony said. "They threw a couple punches at us now and it's time for us to do the same."

The Celtics were the first of the eight NBA teams that have come from 3-1 down, beating Philadelphia in 1968, and put themselves on the short list of teams that have erased a 2-0 deficit the next year in the NBA Finals.

So perhaps it would be fitting if they were the first to overcome 3-0.

"I think so. I mean, I think that would be wonderful, and someone's going to do it and I want it to be us, obviously, since that's the situation we're in," Boston coach Doc Rivers said before the game. "Someone will do it, and I really want to be a part of that."

He's still got a chance.

The Knicks limited the Celtics to 75 points per game while winning the first three, and nearly came back to win Game 4 on Sunday even without Smith. So they felt good even after missing their first chance to wrap it up, when Anthony was 10 of 35 in an overtime loss.

Point guard Raymond Felton said the Knicks still feel in control of the series "for sure."

"I mean, this is what playoff basketball is about. Yes, we wish we could have swept them, yes we wish we could have won that game tonight. Sometimes things don't happen that way," he added. "Things aren't always pretty, things aren't always the way you want them to be. We've just got to grind it out and go get a win."

Though few of these players were here for the streak, the Knicks were perhaps a bit overconfident heading into the game for a franchise that lost an NBA-record 13 straight postseason games from 2001-12.

Smith said Tuesday he'd have been playing golf instead of practicing had he played in Game 4, and players wore black to the game Wednesday as if they were heading to the Celtics' "funeral."

The Celtics didn't like it, with reserve Jordan Crawford exchanging words with Anthony and Raymond Felton after the final buzzer.

Forget the funeral. The Celtics are still very much alive.

"Well, we was going to a funeral, but it looks like we got buried," Smith said. "Basketball is a very humbling game."

Smith finally made a 3-pointer to end his drought, and then another cut what had been a 15-point Boston lead to 88-83 with 1:05 remaining. But Garnett made a jumper, then knocked down two free throws to clinch it.

The Knicks were just 5 of 22 from 3-point range, which looked worse until Smith hit three late.

The Sixth Man of the Year received a loud ovation when he went to check in during the first quarter, but heard a few boos by the third. They will likely be deafening on Friday, the kind usually reserved in Boston for a Lakers player.

By the time Anthony drove right into the middle of the lane for a dunk that made it 11-0, the Celtics already had three turnovers. But Bass made a pair of free throws and then a dunk to settle them down. He added five more points in the period as Boston climbed within 22-20 even though Pierce missed all six shots in a scoreless 12 minutes.

He made a 3-pointer shortly after returning from a break in the second, and another gave the Celtics their first lead at 34-33 with 5:46 remaining in the half. Then Garnett had two baskets in an 8-0 run that gave Boston a 42-37 advantage, and the Celtics walked off at halftime to mostly stunned silence within Madison Square Garden with a 45-39 lead.

The second halves had belonged to the Knicks in the series, but the Celtics remained steady in the third quarter, opening a 69-60 lead on Terry's 3-pointer with 41 seconds left, and pushed it to 75-60 early in the fourth.

NOTES: Woodson said the team will try to get Amare Stoudemire some contact in practice to see if he will be ready to play in the next round. Woodson said Stoudemire, who is recovering from right knee surgery, is "looking pretty good right now." ... Jason Kidd was honored before the game after winning the NBA's Sportsmanship Award on Tuesday. He is the first player to win it in back-to-back years and joins Grant Hill as the only player to win it multiple times.

Time Warner 1Q earnings climb, beats Street

NEW YORK (AP) ? Time Warner says earnings grew 24 percent in the first three months of the year despite a slight drop in revenue, as the company benefited from strength in its television networks.

In the first quarter, Time Warner Inc. reported net income of $720 million, or 75 cents per share, compared with $583 million, or 59 cents, a year earlier.

Adjusted for one-time items, the company earned 82 cents per share, beating the 75 cents expected by analysts surveyed by FactSet.

But revenue of $6.94 billion was short of the $7.16 billion expected by analysts. In the same period last year, revenue was $6.98 billion.

The company also reaffirmed its outlook for the full year. It expects percentage growth in adjusted earnings to be in the low double digits.

Studying meteorites may reveal Mars' secrets of life

May 1, 2013 ? In an effort to determine if conditions were ever right on Mars to sustain life, a team of scientists, including a Michigan State University professor, has examined a meteorite that formed on the Red Planet more than a billion years ago.

And although this team's work is not specifically solving the mystery, it is laying the groundwork for future researchers to answer this age-old question.

The problem, said MSU geological sciences professor Michael Velbel, is that most meteorites that originated on Mars arrived on Earth so long ago that now they have characteristics that tell of their life on Earth, obscuring any clues it might offer about their time on Mars.

"These meteorites contain water-related mineral and chemical signatures that can signify habitable conditions," he said. "The trouble is by the time most of these meteorites have been lying around on Earth they pick up signatures that look just like habitable environments, because they are. Earth, obviously, is habitable.

"If we could somehow prove the signature on the meteorite was from before it came to Earth, that would be telling us about Mars."

Specifically, the team found mineral and chemical signatures on the rocks that indicated terrestrial weathering -- changes that took place on Earth. The identification of these types of changes will provide valuable clues as scientists continue to examine the meteorites.

"Our contribution is to provide additional depth and a little broader view than some work has done before in sorting out those two kinds of water-related alterations -- the ones that happened on Earth and the ones that happened on Mars," Velbel said.

The meteorite that Velbel and his colleagues examined -- known as a nakhlite meteorite -- was recovered in 2003 in the Miller Range of Antarctica. About the size of a tennis ball and weighing in at one-and-a-half pounds, the meteorite was one of hundreds recovered from that area.

Velbel said past examinations of meteorites that originated on Mars, as well as satellite and Rover data, prove water once existed on Mars, which is the fourth planet from the sun and Earth's nearest Solar System neighbor.

"However," he said, "until a Mars mission successfully returns samples from Mars, mineralogical studies of geochemical processes on Mars will continue to depend heavily on data from meteorites."

Velbel is currently serving as a senior fellow at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C.

The research is published in Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, a bi-weekly journal co-sponsored by two professional societies, the Geochemical Society and the Meteoritical Society.

Stock futures little changed as Wall Street set to pause after rally

By Angela Moon

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stock futures were little changed on Tuesday as investors awaited a batch of economic data for a confirmation that the recent rally that has taken the S&P 500 to an another record close is solid.

The Federal Open Market Committee also begins its two-day meeting on monetary policy, with results scheduled to be announced on Wednesday. A recent slew of weak growth data has raised expectations the Federal Reserve will keep its pace of bond buying at $85 billion a month.

"With earnings season coming to an end, the focus is now on what the next market driving theme is," said Andre Bakhos, director of market analytics at Lek Securities in New York.

"The economic data, the comments from ECB and FOMC could all be the drivers, an additional confirmation to justify the levels we are at now. All of these factors come to play for us to break out to a whole new territory, above 1,600 (on the S&P 500)."

S&P 500 futures fell 1.9 points and were slightly below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration of the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures fell 3 points while Nasdaq 100 futures added 0.75 point.

The S&P 500 index ended at an all-time high on Monday as growth-oriented stocks, including energy and technology, led the way to the index's sixth rise in the past seven sessions.

A positive finish to April would deliver a sixth straight month of gains. That would be the longest winning streak since September 2009 when the index rallied for seven straight months. The broad market index is up 1.6 percent for the month.

In macroeconomic news, the U.S. employment cost index is due at 8:30 a.m. ET (1230 GMT) and the S&P/Case-Shiller home-price index for February is due at 9 a.m. ET.

The 20-city Case Shiller Home Price Index is set for another jump in February, seen rising 9 percent year-on-year from 8.1 percent in January, giving the series its fastest pace of growth since May 2006, according to a Reuters survey of analysts.

The Chicago purchasing managers' index for April will be released at 9:45 a.m. ET and the Conference Board's April consumer confidence index is due at 10:00 a.m. ET.

Financial stocks were likely to be in focus after UBS beat expectations for first-quarter profit thanks to a surge in trading income from its investment bank and more fees from wealthy clients. Strong results from banks and expectations of more central bank stimulus took European shares to a 4-1/2 year high.

On the corporate earnings front, Pfizer Inc shares were down 3 percent in premarket trade after posting lower-than-expected quarterly earnings and revenue. The largest U.S. drugmaker also trimmed its full-year profit outlook.

U.S. retailer Best Buy Co Inc retreated from its ill-fated European expansion by selling its stake in a joint venture to Carphone Warehouse Group for less than half what it paid five years ago. Best Buy shares rose more than 5 percent in premarket trade.

Every Minute Gets Its Own Hand on the Opus XIII

Harry Winston prides itself on thinking outside the box, or the watch case, when it comes to designing new timepieces. Particularly with the company's Opus series that seems determined to get rid of traditional watch hands once and for all.

The Opus XIII?or the Opus Thirteen if your roman numerals are a little rusty?uses a series of 59 moving ticks to represent the minutes, and a series of pop-out triangles to indicate the hour. It's another one of those complicated movements that's easier to understand in motion, so we recommend staring in awe at promotional video.

Understandably, with all the moving parts that bring the watch to life, the Opus XIII only has about a 35 hour power reserve. So if you're one of the lucky 130 people to drop a small fortune on one, you'll need to get in the habit of using a watch winder every night to keep it functional. [Harry Winston via Born Rich]
