ON KANNADA FONTS AND SOFTWARE | Honest Reviews Online

ON KANNADA FONTS AND SOFTWARE.

?

KANNADA has got the reputation of being one of the oldest yet surviving languages of the world. In spite of? being having an unbroken and a rich legacy of? literary history of more than fifteen hundred years, the efforts of developing Kannada as a computer language were initiated just about twenty years back. Karnataka established its first software technology park in 1991 at Whitefield near Bengaluru in a technical collaboration with the Singapore government. It also became the first state to announce a policy on Information Technology. The usable versions of Kannada fonts and software are in vogue since 12-13 years or so.

?

The Government of Karnataka, Kannada Abhivriddhi Pradhikara, Kannada Ganaka Parishat and some of the IT workers having concern for Kannada have collectively strived hard in bringing out a number of user friendly Kannada fonts and software. Some of the important Kannada fonts and software are Nudi, Baraha, Ileap, Srilipi, Akriti, Kairali, Prakashak, Brahmi, Kuvempu, Kannada Kacheri, Kannada Saurabha, Kalitha etc. Apart from these Shabdaratna, Ka Baraha, Leaplight, Leap Office are the Kannada related software that are in use.

?

Srilipi package has multilingual and multi level applications. There are 68 Kannada modular fonts and 66 ITR fonts in this package. It can be used with 5 to 10 different keyboard layouts for at least 18 different Indian languages and also in languages having an easy interface with English. It has 320 fonts and 296 additional ITR fonts that can be used for Marathi, Sanskrit and Hindi languages. Leap Office shares a lot of similarities with the Srilipi package.

?

KPRao and Shabdaratna software are easy to use, even operators not familiar with Kannada can also use these software. The special feature of Shabdaratna is that it is available in dual-language versions as Kannada-English and Hindi-English.

?

Ka Baraha and Ba Baraha are the two software that are easily adaptable in the computer and the must use for a Kannada learner through computer. Any one familiar with the English typing can easily use this Kannada software.

?

Kalitha is the Bench Mark Software developed by the Kannada Ganaka Parishat. This software is readily available on its website for free! Baraha is also available free of cost over the internet, but the premium version is not a freeware. In Kannada, Baraha literally means ?Writing?. This was released in 1998 as a freeware in order to popularize the usage of Kannada language software in the cyber world. Today millions across the world are using Baraha for creating content in Indian languages. Baraha has broken the most challenging hurdle of Key board barrier. A phonetic key board is used and hence the user can switch in between Kannada and English language typing in computers without a least of discomfort.

?

Nudi is a computer program and font encoding standard used for displaying and managing the modern Kannada script in computers and is available as a freeware in the official website of Kannada Ganaka Parishat. Among the various versions of Nudi, Nudi 4.0 is currently in use. This software has compatibility with most of the Windows data based programs.

20 Points That Shape Your Negotiation First Impression

?One of the things you need to accomplish to maximize your success as a negotiator is to create the perfect first impression with your suppliers.

The perfect first impression is one where your suppliers immediately know that you are a negotiating force to be reckoned with.? Whether you are entering a collaborative or a competitive negotiation, you want your suppliers to be uncomfortable negotiating with you to some degree.

Notice that I said "uncomfortable" not "intimidated."? Many negotiations today are collaborative where the two parties exchange ideas that adds value to the business deal instead of dividing it, so intimidation is bad.? But a strong first impression will keep your suppliers from taking advantage of a procurement professional who walks on the fine line that separates a win-win attitude from an over-compromising disposition.? Believe me, some suppliers look for signs of weakness and exploit that, even in the context of a supposed win-win negotiation.

Do you know what variables are involved in creating that perfect first impression?? There are probably more than you think!? Here are just 20 variables...

  1. Whether you are found waiting for the supplier in the conference room or whether you enter the negotiation when it is scheduled to begin
  2. The firmness of the grip of your handshake
  3. The duration and intensity of the eye contact you make with the supplier
  4. Your posture
  5. Your use of slang ("Hey, John") vs. slightly more formal language ("Good afternoon, John")
  6. The speed at which you speak
  7. Your ability to have facts memorized vs. having to look them up
  8. The volume at which you speak
  9. The relative amount of "filler" (e.g., ums, ya knows, I means, etc.) you use while speaking
  10. How well-groomed you are
  11. How well-dressed you are
  12. Your facial expressions
  13. Whether you nod affirmatively when being spoken to or hold your head still
  14. How others on your team refer to you (e.g., "Jimmy," "Jim," "Mr. Smith," etc.)
  15. Whether or not you delegate tasks to others on your own team during the negotiation
  16. What you bring with you to the negotiation (e.g., electronic devices, soft drink cups, etc.)
  17. How organized your materials are
  18. Whether or not you've insisted on an agenda prior to the meeting
  19. Whether you or your designee drafted the agenda or allowed the supplier to do so
  20. The title on your business card (too many executives bring one to a negotiation and that's a mistake - having a tangible reminder in front of the supplier that you are a high-ranking individual is never a bad thing)
Have you ever evaluated these things about yourself?? When preparing for a negotiation, have you ever thought about how you want to come across in any of these areas?

If not, I hope that I sparked a little interest in you doing so and that you can make the best possible first impression in your next negotiation.? Use these points as a checklist for things to think about during your future negotiation preparations.

Stay tuned...some time in the future, I will be providing some additional and detailed insights into the rights and wrongs for each point.? For now, if you're interested in learning more about negotiation, consider the following online course options:

Ask Questions ? Answers Archive ? Home Improvement Projects to ...

Are you planning to finish some home improvement projects to help increase the value of your home? If your house is on the market, or you plan to put it up for sale in the near future, it makes sense to make it as attractive as possible to possible buyers. This is a lot harder than it sounds, though, because some of the improvements you want to make are expensive and others could send the wrong message to buyers.

One of the very first things you need to do when your house is on the market is make sure that all of the most important systems and appliances are working properly. This includes things like your house?s heating system, all of the water heaters and the plumbing. Try to remember that every potential buyer is going to have the house professionally inspected and if there are any serious problems with it, they could reconsider the sale or make you lower the price. Appearances count as well, and if your boiler looks like it hasn?t been replaced in several decades, it won?t make a good impression at all. This is true for your refrigerator too. Show your potential buyers that you cared enough about your house that you kept all of the important things up to date.

Make sure that you don?t make improvements to your home that reflect your own personal tastes, especially if they are a little unusual or idiosyncratic. For example, maybe you really like decorating your home in the styles popular in feudal Japan or in Victorian England; it?s perfectly fine but not everybody shares your personal tastes.

When you do all of your decorating in just one style you can lower the overall appeal of your home. Try to keep your style as neutral as possible when you?re selling it. This is also true when you want to go after really bright or unconventional paint colors for your walls. You want your home to be as attractive as possible to as many potential buyers as possible.

Spending money toward making your home more energy efficient is one option for raising the value of your home. When it comes to spending money, this is something that might be worthwhile, especially since people are more aware of how much they are spending on energy, as well as trying to be friendlier to the environment. So putting in energy efficient windows, solar panels or having your home insulated is often a good investment. Ordinarily, the warranty for things like new windows can be transferred to the new homeowner and this can be a pleasant feature. Because the odds are on your side for regaining the money you spend, you should take a look at the different choices you have in making your home more energy efficient.

It makes a lot of sense to make sure that your house is in the absolute best condition it can be in when you want to show it to potential buyers. You do not want your potential buyers to have to use their imaginations to see how it can look after it has been repaired, painted and cleaned up. Most people prefer that the house be as close to perfect as possible. The truth is, however, that you need to take all of these ideas under advisement before you can take on any real home improvement projects.

Parents: Sharing of Yale grad's essay is a comfort

WAYLAND, Mass. (AP) ? "What we have to remember is that we can still do anything," Marina Keegan wrote to fellow Yale University graduates. "... We can't, we must not lose this sense of possibility because in the end, it's all we have."

Three days after the Yale alumna's death in a car crash, her parents, Tracy and Kevin Keegan, said from their Massachusetts home that it was comforting that even strangers were drawing inspiration from their daughter's words as her last newspaper column spread across the Internet.

"I would love my daughter's words, few as they may be, to be shared," Tracy Keegan said. "... That's all that's left of her now, her words."

Yale Daily News Editor Max de La Bruyere said Tuesday that the newspaper put Keegan's print column online as a tribute following her death Saturday on Cape Cod. He said it had gotten 400,000 hits on the newspaper's website after first spreading through Yale students' Facebook and Twitter accounts. The newspaper tracked readers as far away as Asia.

"It's a huge outpouring of sympathy," he said. "People are very moved by it."

The 22-year-old's column talked about anxiety that came with the feeling of losing the web of fellowship at Yale. She said what she wanted out of life was "the opposite of loneliness," and encouraged classmates by saying "the best years of our lives are not behind us."

"It's not quite love and it's not quite community," the English major wrote of her time at Yale. "It's just this feeling that there are people, an abundance of people, who are in this together."

The Keegans said their daughter's boyfriend, 22-year-old Michael Gocksch of Centerport, N.Y., fell asleep at the wheel while driving with her to their family's summer place in Wellfleet on Cape Cod.

The young couple had been to Brookline earlier in the day so their daughter could introduce her boyfriend and fellow 2012 graduate to her grandmother. The couple was heading to a birthday dinner for Keegan's father when she died. Gocksch was hospitalized in stable condition after the crash and later discharged.

Massachusetts State Police are still investigating the cause of the crash, which occurred on Route 6 in the town of Dennis. They said speed wasn't a factor and both were wearing seatbelts. The vehicle drifted off the road and into guardrails on both sides of the road before flipping.

Keegan's parents said she was about to start a job as an assistant to the general counsel at The New Yorker, where she interned last summer and got some of her work onto a magazine blog.

The New York Times also published a piece she wrote after another column she did for the Yale Daily News sparked a debate about why 25 percent of Yale graduates go into finance or consulting instead of pursuing employment more closely connected to their studies and aspirations.

Keegan had been the president of Yale College Democrats. She worked in New Hampshire in the summer of 2008 as one of the youngest paid staffers for the Obama presidential campaign, her parents said Tuesday while looking at a photo of their daughter with the president.

The Keegans spent graduation weekend with their daughter in New Haven, time they said they were grateful for as they prepare for her memorial Saturday at The First Parish in Wayland. They plan to spread her ashes in Cape Cod Bay.

Yale professor and literary critic Harold Bloom said Keegan had become like an adopted granddaughter to him after serving as his research assistant for the past two years. He taught her seminars in Shakespeare and American poetry and called her senior essay about the poet John Keats' influence on author F. Scott Fitzgerald's work "quite publishable."

In August, a musical that Keegan wrote will be staged in New York City as part of The New York International Fringe Festival, fellow 2012 Yale graduate and project collaborator Mark Sonnenblick said.

Called "Independents," the play is about a group of 20-somethings smuggling drugs on a Revolutionary War-era ship while posing as war re-enactors. When the posse's leader disappears, the friends try to become real re-enactors.

Sonnenblick, who wrote the show's lyrics, said the script is about transitioning to adulthood and maintaining community and relationships, themes that embodied much of Keegan's writing.

"These are things Marina didn't necessarily have answers for," Sonnenblick said. "She took on issues she was concerned about and happened to her and her friends."

The Yale graduate said it like this in her last column: "We're in this together, 2012. Let's make something happen to this world."

Facebook smartphone to launch next year with the ... - Know Your Cell

Rumors of a Facebook smartphone are back with a vengeance?with the social networking titan reportedly stealing key Apple engineers to create a smartphone slated to launch in 2013.

The phone will supposedly run a heavily modified version of Android, which Facebook has designed to deeply integrate with its own services. It will sort of be like what Amazon did in creating the Kindle Fire.

While no launch timing has been revealed, Facebook has reportedly poached over 12 key software and hardware engineers from Apple to assist with the project. HTC may also have a hand in the process, with the smartphone manufacturer perhaps working on the OS and hardware as well.

This most recent news of a Facebook phone is sort of a suprise as it was thought the company had decided against building a branded smartphone late last year. News had surfaced that it had decided to customize Android devices with tight Facebook integration and not its own proprietary OS.

The New York Times report indicates that the phone is pretty far along in the development process, though it may be well over a year before we actually see anything. Still, just thinking of another competitor in the mobile market makes me excited.

Would you buy a Facebook-branded smartphone?

Hidden Mind Patterns Limiting Achievement: Fear of Failure, Fear of ...

Hidden Mind Patterns Limiting Achievement: Fear of Failure, Fear of Success

Alina Constantin ? Lightman Consulting

Modern Tokyo Times

Success can take (www.lightman-consulting.com)?many shapes and can be defined in many ways but one thing is for sure: it is one of the most popular concepts of the 21st Century and it?s the ideal of every person regardless age, gender, culture or religious orientation.

Success is the ultimate goal that keeps many entrepreneurs focused nonstop on their businesses, looking for ways to accelerate their achievements and success. Every entrepreneur, organization leader, manager or employee has a different perception of success. For this reason, they engage differently in their relationship with success, according to their own perception of themselves and their perception of the skills necessary to accomplish their goals.? This is the main reason why some people can manage success better than others.

?I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear? ? Nelson Mandela

There are many examples of people who received an unexpected promotion but because they believed they don?t have the right skills for the job, most of the time they felt under constant pressure. They consumed a lot of time and energy worrying about all the things they couldn?t properly do because they believed they don?t have the right abilities and eventually ended up being less productive than they were expected to be. This constant internal pressure and stress turned into failure. What they actually did was to align the way they saw themselves and their abilities with the reality that resulted, thus accomplishing what is also known as self-fulfilled prophecy.

?We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear? ? Martin Luther King, Jr.

The low, medium or high level of people?s achievement speaks not only about their skills required for a particular task but also about their ability to understand and control their thinking and behavior. Dr. Jack Plaks, a social psychologist at the University of Toronto observed that generally, people believe about themselves that they know themselves well enough to be able to predict their own outcomes. However, if the outcome is unexpected, it becomes a source of high anxiety. If the unexpected outcome is negative, the anxiety produced is going to contribute to the effort of restoring the sense of mental prediction, as it was prior to the outcome. But when it comes to unexpected success, the various research into this area have discovered that people react differently in order to fulfill their perception of self and of their abilities. As results of his research, Dr. Plaks discovered that some people believe about their abilities that they are fixed and can?t change with learning (the level of intelligence in particular) and others understood that their skills are malleable and can be improved through learning. Students that participated in the research had been given a test and afterwards they have all been provided with a training program to help them understand the tasks they weren?t able to solve. Then, everybody took the same test again. Dr. Plaks discovered that even if everybody took part in the same learning session, the students with steadfast beliefs and perspective reported higher anxiety, performed worse and couldn?t handle success because it went against their established views.

?Fear has its use but cowardice has none? ? Mahatma Gandhi

In the workplace, flexible people are more likely to try new things, to allow their creativity to soar and to think in terms of solutions rather than personal limitations. Managers can increase their employees potential and implicitly the value that they bring to the organization. Rather than labeling the employee and putting them into their respective boxes and implying that this is what they can only do and this is the limit of their abilities, managers can create an atmosphere in which people are encouraged to try new things without the fear of failure.

The need of constantly being in control and always being able to predict outcomes has a very strong bond with the fear of failure. Fear of failure is the number one enemy of ambitious ideas and great achievements. If people are afraid of trying new things to avoid the feeling of failure or they believe they don?t deserve their achievements and success, in both cases they will find themselves in a place where anxiety and frustration takes the place of joy and enthusiasm. We all feel ?the fear,? some of us choose not to listen to it and do things anyway.

?Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear? ? Mark Twain

Success comes from within. Entrepreneurs, leaders and employees have the power to choose to see themselves as the owners of unlimited rough potential. This potential can take various shapes through continuous learning and exposure to new experiences that always are a powerful source of growth and improvement. Remember that information is not power, information is potential power and only through continuous action it turns into positive results.

Ghostly gamma-ray beams blast from Milky Way's center

Ghostly gamma-ray beams blast from Milky Way's center [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 29-May-2012

Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics

As galaxies go, our Milky Way is pretty quiet. Active galaxies have cores that glow brightly, powered by supermassive black holes swallowing material, and often spit twin jets in opposite directions. In contrast, the Milky Way's center shows little activity. But it wasn't always so peaceful. New evidence of ghostly gamma-ray beams suggests that the Milky Way's central black hole was much more active in the past.

"These faint jets are a ghost or after-image of what existed a million years ago," said Meng Su, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), and lead author of a new paper in the Astrophysical Journal.

"They strengthen the case for an active galactic nucleus in the Milky Way's relatively recent past," he added.

The two beams, or jets, were revealed by NASA's Fermi space telescope. They extend from the galactic center to a distance of 27,000 light-years above and below the galactic plane. They are the first such gamma-ray jets ever found, and the only ones close enough to resolve with Fermi.

The newfound jets may be related to mysterious gamma-ray bubbles that Fermi detected in 2010. Those bubbles also stretch 27,000 light-years from the center of the Milky Way. However, where the bubbles are perpendicular to the galactic plane, the gamma-ray jets are tilted at an angle of 15 degrees. This may reflect a tilt of the accretion disk surrounding the supermassive black hole.

"The central accretion disk can warp as it spirals in toward the black hole, under the influence of the black hole's spin," explained co-author Douglas Finkbeiner of the CfA. "The magnetic field embedded in the disk therefore accelerates the jet material along the spin axis of the black hole, which may not be aligned with the Milky Way."

The two structures also formed differently. The jets were produced when plasma squirted out from the galactic center, following a corkscrew-like magnetic field that kept it tightly focused. The gamma-ray bubbles likely were created by a "wind" of hot matter blowing outward from the black hole's accretion disk. As a result, they are much broader than the narrow jets.

Both the jets and bubbles are powered by inverse Compton scattering. In that process, electrons moving near the speed of light collide with low-energy light, such as radio or infrared photons. The collision increases the energy of the photons into the gamma-ray part of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The discovery leaves open the question of when the Milky Way was last active. A minimum age can be calculated by dividing the jet's 27,000-light-year length by its approximate speed. However, it may have persisted for much longer.

"These jets probably flickered on and off as the supermassive black hole alternately gulped and sipped material," said Finkbeiner.

It would take a tremendous influx of matter for the galactic core to fire up again. Finkbeiner estimates that a molecular cloud weighing about 10,000 times as much as the Sun would be required.

"Shoving 10,000 suns into the black hole at once would do the trick. Black holes are messy eaters, so some of that material would spew out and power the jets," he said.

Ghostly gamma-ray beams blast from Milky Way's center [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 29-May-2012

Golly, Did Italy Really Give Legal Status to 12 Million Illegal Aliens ...

If you take a quick look at the bottom of the figure below you may come to the conclusion that Italy has legalized 12,170,000 illegal aliens.

That's a very large number, particularly in the context of that nation's population of 60,500,000 or so, and the estimates that we have 11 to 12 million illegal aliens in the United States, with a population more than five times that of Italy.

But if you look a little more closely at the figure (and some more-migration writers should have done this, too) you will see that while Italy has had more legalizations than any other nation in Europe, the number shown is 12,17,000. That is clearly wrong.

Either the zero to the right of the seven has been dropped which would make that corrected number 12,170,000, or, more likely, the comma after the two should have been after the one, so that corrected number would be 1,217,000.

What makes this error so arresting is that it has been published at least three times over the last three years, the last two times by the lushly funded Migration Policy Institute, the establishmentarian think tank of the more-migration people. With a fund balance of $7,452,930 at the end of its fiscal year 2009 and eight staffers making more than $100,000 a year, the organization probably could afford a proofreader. (The fiscal data are from the MPI's IRS Form 990, which is a matter of public record.)

The figure with the 12,17,000 legalizations apparently first appeared in a book published by Amsterdam University Press in 2009; its name and the name of its authors appear at the bottom of the figure.

Next, in December of last year, MPI re-published the figure, as shown, in an article titled "Regularizations in the European Union: The Contentious Policy Tool", and then earlier this month the same figure, with the same error, appeared as an illustration to another MPI article, "Unauthorized Immigrants in the United States and Europe: The Use of Legalization/Regularization as a Policy Tool".

The links were working at the time this blog was filed, but MPI may have changed things thereafter.

The misplaced legalization beneficiaries in Italy, or the wandering comma, to one side, the MPI article had some interesting data on the subject. For example, the United States granted legal status to more people than all the European legalizations put together through its various legalizations, notably IRCA in the 1980s. The article does not make this point but it shows 3,760,618 U.S. legalizations in 1986 through 2009, as compared with 3,244,382 in Europe in the years 1996-2007.

MPI uses a definition of U.S. legalizations that excludes some activities that I would characterize as legalizations, so I think the number they use for the United States is smaller than it should be. (Granting legal status on an ongoing basis to certain illegal alien juveniles in the hands of American court systems and calling them special immigrants is one such class that I would include that they do not.)

The article also divides legalization beneficiaries into three subheadings: general legalization, such as those receiving benefits from the mainline IRCA program of 1986; registry fillers, those saying simply that they had been in the United States in illegal status for a very long time; and special groups, such as those in the Chinese Student Protection Act of October 9, 1992.

As one who first studied overseas legalization efforts in the 1970s (under relatively tiny grants from the Ford Foundation and the German Marshall Fund), I found the current work of special interest, notably the finding ? again illustrated by the figure ? that the nations of southern Europe have been much more generous in these programs than their more prosperous neighbors in northern Europe.

One wonders if there is any cause-and-effect relationship between the open-door amnesty policies of Italy, Spain, Greece, and Portugal, at the bottom end of the figure, and the financial problems that those four economies ? particularly Greece ? are encountering, problems that are less severe for many of the countries higher on the figure, such as Germany, the U.K., and Sweden.

MPI does not speculate about such things.

No EU trademark for chocolate rabbit, says court

A Swiss-made chocolate bunny, wrapped in gold foil and with a red ribbon around its neck, cannot be registered as a trademark, the EU court has ruled.

Lindt and Spruengli have made the rabbit since 1952 and applied for an EU trademark in 2004.

But other firms make Easter chocolate bunnies too and an Austrian company has even wrapped them in gold foil.

Now the European Court has confirmed an earlier ruling that Lindt?s rabbit is devoid of any distinctive character.

Lindt appealed against the initial ruling, arguing that it had built a trademark over a long period and wanted to protect what had become a strong brand.

In making its initial judgement in 2010, the EU?s second-highest court ? the General Court ? examined the shape of the rabbit, the gold foil and the pleated red ribbon to which a small bell was attached.

It decided that ?the combination of the shape, the colours and the pleated ribbon with a small bell are not sufficiently different? from the wrapping of other chocolate products, specifically rabbits.

Lindt disputed its findings, arguing that only three such products were on the market and that its own chocolate bunny was registered in as many as 15 EU states.

Last year, Lindt successfully persuaded an Austrian court to stop rival chocolate-maker Hauswirth manufacturing Easter bunnies that resembled the Lindt product.

But the European Court of Justice, in its judgement on Thursday, decided that the Swiss chocolate maker had ?failed to establish that the mark has inherent distinctive character and that that was the case throughout the European Union?.

Asking rents grew a strong 10 percent in the past year, while vacancies dipped to just over 5 percent in 2012?s ...

NASA To Future Lunar Explorers: Don't Mess With Our Moon Stuff

There's a very legitimate question of jurisdiction. The U.S. has no legal authority over the moon, any more than they do venus or mars.

In essence, it would be kind of a dickish thing to do to mess with historical sites on the moon, but the U.S. government has no legal authority over the moon. I'd say something which has been left unattended for 50+ years would qualify as "abandoned", so it's not like theft laws should apply.

There is the issue that if the craft is a U.S.-based craft, then like ships in inte
