Facebook smartphone to launch next year with the ... - Know Your Cell

Rumors of a Facebook smartphone are back with a vengeance?with the social networking titan reportedly stealing key Apple engineers to create a smartphone slated to launch in 2013.

The phone will supposedly run a heavily modified version of Android, which Facebook has designed to deeply integrate with its own services. It will sort of be like what Amazon did in creating the Kindle Fire.

While no launch timing has been revealed, Facebook has reportedly poached over 12 key software and hardware engineers from Apple to assist with the project. HTC may also have a hand in the process, with the smartphone manufacturer perhaps working on the OS and hardware as well.

This most recent news of a Facebook phone is sort of a suprise as it was thought the company had decided against building a branded smartphone late last year. News had surfaced that it had decided to customize Android devices with tight Facebook integration and not its own proprietary OS.

The New York Times report indicates that the phone is pretty far along in the development process, though it may be well over a year before we actually see anything. Still, just thinking of another competitor in the mobile market makes me excited.

Would you buy a Facebook-branded smartphone?
